As a group, we decided that rather than talking directly with each candidate about their views, we would talk to those that knew the candidates. By speaking with their acquaintances and those that have attended meetings in the Township we have been able to form an opinion of where each stands on certain issues. The issues that we are primarily concerned with are:
River Conservation, maintaining theRural Character of our Township and the proper use of Resources for roads, ditching and the needs of our citizens.
RIVER CONSERVATION
As an organization, we would like to have the River Conservation District left as is, or have the new district adopted as proposed by the Planning Commission. Any plan to reduce or eliminate the areas of protection would be unacceptable. This proposal has been tabled for more than a year.
RURAL CHARACTER
In order to maintain the rural character of our Township, we believe that there were two ordinances proposed by the Planning Commission that would help. The first was a road ordinance that would regulate how and where a road could be built. This was changed to accommodate builders and developers before passing. The second was a topography ordinance that would regulate the building process by maintaining elevations and ensuring that there would be proper run off of all waters. These need to be in place as originally proposed.
RESOURCE COMMITMENT
Although we realize that there are limited resources (money) in our Township, we also believe that the needs of the residents are paramount. This would include the proper maintenance of all our roads, ditching where necessary, and working within the community to establish a “Neighbor Helping Neighbor” group. This would be staffed by volunteers to help our neighbors that need temporary assistance and could be coordinated with minimal help from the Township offices.
FRIENDS OF THE BELLE RIVER is a bi-partisan committee of township residents and would like to endorse the following candidates based on their beliefs, views, and goals for the Township of Riley.
REPUBLICAN
John Rhodes – Supervisor
Nancy Dudek – Treasurer
Bill Lawniczak – Trustee
DEMOCRAT
Kitty Slamka – Supervisor
Linda Waddy – Clerk

ElzeeM,
We appreciate all of the work that you and others put into your findings. Hopefully informed voters will make the correct decisions on August 5th
Hello Friends, Congrats on your website. I agree with your choice of candidates for the up coming election. Maybe then, the township will get back on the right track and stop going backwards. Putting the people first and the future of the township, should be everyone's top priority. Sadly, it's not with some of the current board members. So, you know what WE have to do in August. Make the changes ourselves, right?
Fence Sitter
The closer it's getting to the election, I'm seeing Rushing, Titus & Hazelton suddenly have an interest in water quality and the Belle River. Is this only to get elected??
Harley - It's obvious from the past 3+ years that we need to make OUR voices heard this election.
Fence sitter - Based on past comments from these three board members such as "why do we even have a river conservation district?", I'd say their current interest would most likely be ONLY because of the upcoming election. I guess we need to let the voters decide.
Not so long ago (4 years) Riley Twp was the model township in St. Clair County. People in the county would comment on how well the Township Board worked together FOR THE PEOPLE. Riley Twp was at the forefront of administration and the envy of other townships. The rural character of the township was enforced, the river was protected, and people were proud to say, "I live in Riley Twp".-- SO, what has changed? 4 years ago we elected Dave Rushing, Linda Hazelton and Al Titus. NOW, Riley Twp is the laughing stock of St. Clair County. THINK ABOUT IT
